The wide array of hinges found in a hardware or online stores can be quite overwhelming. But it can be such a simple choice if you learn a little about hinges before you go shopping for them. So, how do you know which type of hinge is the correct one to do the job?

First, you can narrow down the choices by some key factors. Based on the size, weight, and shape of your work materials, does the hinge need to be small and subtle or heavy and sturdy?



Another vital aspect to consider is that, while many hinges are reversible, others are built for either a right or left hand door. An example of this is the loose-pin hinge. Common for hanging doors, this pin should be removed from the top; hence, you simply cannot reverse a loose-pin hinge.



You can identify if you require a right or left hinge by standing on the outside of the door. If the door opens from you toward your right hand side, then you need right hand hinges, too. If it opens from you toward your left hand side, you need to pile up on some left hand hinges.



Moreover, consider how much of the hinge you would like to be showing when the door is closed. If the hinge is visible, should it be ornamental in nature or can it be plain and functional in design? Ball bearing hinges are normally used for heavy-duty door mountings, such as doors opening to a building’s exterior. Also utilized for doors that are used a lot.

Butterfly hinge – Typically used on lightweight doors, butterfly hinges are available in an array of shapes and patterns. Most butterfly hinges are easy to fit as well.

Double acting hinge – This type of hinge opens in any direction and mainly used for folding doors.

Flush hinge – Not as robust as butt hinges, flush hinges are used mostly for cabinets and lightweight doors. This is ideal if you wish to conceal the entire hinge except the barrel.

Pivot hinge – Flexible and excellent for recessed, overlay of flush doors, pivot hinge’s advantage is that it does not need a doorframe for mounting.

Spring loaded hinge – As the name signifies, spring loaded hinge has a spring-loaded system that automatically closes the door. Varieties with adjustable tension features are also available.

Table top hinge – This is utilized for drop tables to split pieces where one must drop away from the other piece.

Concealed hinge – Usually available in 25-36 mm, concealed hinges are easily adjustable once fitted and is designed for chipboard and MDF use.

Tee Hinges – These are very common hinges used for outside applications. They come in many different sizes and weights. Main uses are on gates, sheds, animal housings plus many other applications.

Continuous Hinges or Piano Hinges – The continuous hinge is utilized primarily on chest lids, cabinets or where a long hinge is required. Also known as a piano hinge, the continuous hinge is available in brass, stainless steel or normal mild steel and are available in several sizes.

Other hinges – These include: strap hinges, chest hinges, and weld on hinges plus many other. Strap hinges come in many sizes and are suggested for heavy installation conditions.

After pondering on these tips and guidelines above, you should be ready to shop for the appropriate hinge type perfectly suited to your door.

Day 3 – Types of Welding – Welder World eCourse

There are a number of different types of welding.  Today we look over
a few of them.  Depending on what you want to weld, one of these
types will suit you.

Types of Welding
When you think about welding you might think that there is only one
type of welding. This is a common idea because most people only see
the finished product. However, there are many different types of
welding that you might find interesting.

Welding is a way of joining metals to each other to make them firm
and the metal forms a bond that is tight. There are a variety of
bonds that are done depending on the types of welding you use.

Types of welding fit under categories as listed here:

Gas welding
This type of welding creates a flame from a burning gas and this
creates the welding heat that is needed. You will see this in the
following types of welding:

Propane torches — people use this when they want to sweat a joint
or when they want to solder two pieces of metal together. This is
one of the lowest heats and can be used for small things.

Oxyacetylene torch– this heat gets a bit hotter and many people
say this is the most universal type of welding tool you can find.
This is used when you need a very hot flame. This type of torch
will weld a variety of things as long as you have the right metals
and tools for it. It is generally used when you want to cut, braze,
weld or solder something that requires a higher heat. You have to
be careful though because it is a type of heat that can be
difficult to control and it can sometimes overheat the area.

Oxy-propane — this type of welding is used when you want to
solder, braze or heat something. This is a cheaper form of both of
the types of welding that was first listed.

Arc welding
This type of welding creates the heat through the use of an
electric arc. The types of welding that are done through this type
of welding include:

Basic AC & DC arc welders — when you are looking for a way to weld
either heavy gauge steel or cast iron this is the type of welding
to use. It uses rods that you guide along the place to be weld and
these are made of flux coated steel or other materials.

MIG (Metal Inert Gas) — this is a very quick way of welding and
some say it is easier to do than regular arch welding. It is done
through the use of a DC arc and it uses filler metal that is used
with a spool of thin wire. You use inert gas instead of flux. This
is usually used with steal bodywork and is a good choice when you
need to weld sheet metal.

TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) — this type of welding uses an AC arc
that is of high frequency and it is combined with a tungsten
electrode that is shielded by inert gas. This comes together to
create a torch that is controllable. This is a good choice to weld
very thin metals together. If you are working with aluminum or
stainless steel this is a good choice.

What type of metod can i use to remove JB Weld from something?

As you know JB Weld is a putty substance that gets rock har and you can drill it well, I recently had a minor leak on my transmission and now i have just made it worse i was told that there is some type of chemical that will melt the weld away.
