A beginners guide to striking an arc with a welding rod
The theory behind keeping an arc going is, the electrical current is forced between the welding rod tip and the steel you are welding. If you want to be a successful welder you must be able to strike an arc and keep it going without even thinking about it.
The 2 most common ways of starting your arc are by tapping and scratching your welding rod to the steel. Scratching seems to be the most natural way used by beginners.
Scratching is when you swipe the rod across the steel as if you were trying to light a match. Once the rod makes contact with the steel, the arc starts. The only real reason for scratching it to get it started is so it won’t stick to the steel since it is in motion. The trick then is to locate where you want to weld and try to keep the arc going. This takes some practice to get the hang of it.
Tapping is basically stabbing the steel with your welding rod. This is better for starting your rod in the correct welding location, but it is harder to keep the rod from sticking and still maintaining an arc. The natural reaction is once the arc strikes, you will want to pull it away to keep it from sticking. The only problem is, beginners tend to pull it too far away and lose the arc. This can go on and on and is actually pretty funny to watch someone doing this. But we all need to remember we were new at one point also.
Sticking of your welding rod is caused by the rod melting to the steel before it is pulled away slightly to maintain it’s arc. I won’t go into how far away it should be from the steel since it is dependent on what type of rod you are using and the amperage you are welding with.
These are the basics and should give you an idea of how to strike an arc. Just remember that it takes practice and patience to get good at it. One day you will grab the stinger and it will all just click in your head. It will almost start to feel natural, then you will know it’s all coming together.

- Rod and Arc Setting

And, if you are starting with this welding type for the very first time then it is better to do it on a rusty metal work as it is much more tolerant to the rusty surfaces. Also, make sure that your current setting should be in the correct position. And, if you are making use of 2.55mm rods, then make sure to use only 80 amps current supply. Also, polarity settings have to be adjusted. Polarity setting is done in such a way that the rod is positive and the earth is negative.
- Arc Welding Process
At first you need to turn on the welding machine. An electric arc is being generated when the welding rod comes in contact with the juncture of fusion. Generally, Tap Starting and Scratch Starting, are used for the process of electric arc generation. In Tap starting method, an electrode is used to tap on the work that removes excessive flux from electrode tip, which meanwhile creates an electric contact to generate the arc. While in scratch starting method, the rod is made to scratch against the surface of the work slightly and as the spark is generated, the rod can be lifted off. Also, remember not to put extra pressure in the method, because through this the rod might get stuck to the work medium.
Stick welding is known as the process that makes use of a covered electrode called stick. Also, known as Shielded Metal Arc Welding or SMAW, stick welding is the most widely used method today than other welding methods. But, now the question is how do they work?
The equipments used:
Stick welder contains circuitry inside the machine, which enables to carry a specified amount of voltage, therefore creating an arc. And, this is the reason why these welders are sometimes referred to as ARC welders. Totally relying on the application as well as on the machine, the current can be either alternating or direct current. The Weld:-
Factually, there are two types of leads that occurs in a stick welder. One lead is the negative clamp, and the other is the positive lead. In positive lead, the consumable metal stick is placed, while the negative lead is clamped on to the metal that is to be welded. During the process, when positive lead containing the stick comes in contact with the metal, an arc is created that further burns into the metal surface. Throughout the arc burning process, the stick is also burned, which thereby creates the weld. And, this is why welding is considered different than that of soldering process.
Safety Measures
While getting indulged in the process of welding, it is imperative to consider certain safety precautions to get rid of the risky environment. Always make sure to wear a welding hood when striking an arc. It is known that harmful UV rays are produced during the welding that can lead to burn in the eyes, so it is advisable to wear suitable goggles during welding. Also, wear leather welding gloves and a long-sleeved leather jacket, as well as heavy footwear and jeans. Remember, to remove all the inflammable materials from the work area before welding. So, consider the safety measures in order to get clean and successful welding.

Welding Electrode Control – I Help You to Learn How to Manipulate Your Welding Rods
Don’t worry too much about how your welds look at first:
* While you’re improving electrode control, you’ll be learning more about different welding job situations.
* Plus I’ll tell you WHY it’s important to have good rod control.
* After you read these tips, THEN you can practice your welding rod control techniques.
* Whether you swing a golf club or a bat, if you don’t practice in correct ways, the results can be at least EMBARRASSING!
Let’s talk about arc pressure and gravity:
1) Arc pressure is produced by the voltage from the machine as it’s pushing the molten metal outwardly.
2) The pressure will vary depending on machine settings, rod size, & the amount of arc gap.
3) Gravity not only effects the direction of the molten metal, but also it’s going to try to make your puddle drip.
4) If you’re arc welding in a flat position, you mainly just worry about keeping the rod at right angles to the work-pieces, & tilted away from the puddle, to help control the puddle & the slag. (And that will help you to SEE THE PUDDLE!).
5) If you’re going to weld in a vertical position, you need to aim the arc up-ward to preheat the metal & to help keep the puddle from dripping.
6) At the same time, in vertical welding, you no longer need to worry about slag, because gravity is keeping it out of the way.
7) For horizontal positions it’s a lot the same. Gravity will try to drip the weld, so you aim the arc upwardly.
For overhead jobs you keep the rod nearly straight up for the same reasons. You don’t want to do any weaving in overhead welding, instead just use straight “stringer” beads.
Pipe welding:
* Pipe welding is rather unique, in that it involves all positions as you go around it. You will gain real electrode control experience in pipe welding!
* Horizontal welding on pipe can be tricky too, because you need to keep changing the rod angle as you go around.
* Save overhead welding practice for last. Get used to ELECTRODE CONTROL & amp settings in the easier welding positions first.
General tips:
* Learn to keep the arc length as steady as possible, plus keep the rod angle steady.
* Weld in a straight a line. This helps to give your welds to look better, and to give them more strength.
* Use both hands to steady the rod. Either place both hands on the rod holder, or one hand on the rod itself, until it gets too short (or until the rod gets too hot).
* Work on a steady speed to keep a uniform puddle shape. An oval shape is good, but don’t let it get too pointed. A round shape may be too wide, unless you need a wider or heavier bead for the job you’re doing. You’ll soon be able to judge that your welding speed is right for the job size & situation.
* Finding a good amperage setting for the job at hand, will help you to concentrate on getting a good weld, & not be fighting sticking rods, or having the rod burn through the work-piece.
* Learn to hesitate slightly at the start of your welds to ensure that the “puddle” forms sufficiently.
* Also pause a bit, at each side of the bead, when you’re doing a weave weld, to make sure there is good penetration.
REMEMBER, Don’t worry too much about how your welds look at first! Now start practicing!

The Multi-Process (combo) Welder – an answer to the DIY welding needs
Have you ever watched American Chopper or Overhaulin or American Hot Rod and thought man I wish I could fabricate something out of metal like those guys? I constantly wish I had the skills and equipment to do these things. As a high-schooler I was exposed to the skill of welding while working for a commercial HVAC sheet metal contractor and fabricator. When I had the opportunity to fabricate something it always brought a smile to my face.
Now that I have a desk job working as a business manager, I no longer have access to these amazing tools that I once did, although i still would love to be able to make what ever I want out of metal.
I think the biggest deterrent to this has been the entry price to the equipment that I would want/need. A little over 0 for a decent Mig Welder and I will be off and running right? Well, mig welding is a start, but what about a plasma cutter to cut the metal, and what about a tig welder to weld metal that is too thin to weld with a mig welder, and what about welding Aluminum. To obtain all of these types of welders would run in the range of 00 – 00, but the evolution of the welder has created machines capable of all of these processes in one and at a much more affordable price.

Trying out the longevity multi process welder/plasma cutter. this is my first time with this machine and I think it’s good. I still need to get the hang of it and practice but I think I can. I still need to read the book so I don’t know if I even set it correctly but it was better than I thought it would be. it can also tig weld and is a stick welder.
