So what are some of the applications for GTAW?
Obviously, this process is used for a wide variety of applications where the parts are made out of non-ferrous metals. Maintenance and repair is done by both manual and automatic methods of Gas Tungsten Arc Welding. From stainless to titanium, aluminum, inconel, monel, cobalt, magnesium, hastalloy, you name it, and it can probobly be welded with TIG.
It is appropriate for welding of pipe and tubing in all positions. The excellent control of heat input gives maximum penetration while preventing melt-through on the root (first) pass. A lot of times a procedure is used where the root pass is welded with the GTAW process and then completed with Shielded Metal Arc Welding, Gas Metal Arc Welding, or flux Cored Arc Welding. This is used to obtain a high quality, low cost weld.
Consumable inserts are sometimes used in critical service applications. These inserts reduce porosity when alloyed with deoxidizers, improve the contour of the underside of the weld, and minimize cracking in the weld. On thin pipewall (depending on the base metal) , complete fusion is obtained without the use of filler metal. Filler metal , is used with thicker sections in order to fill the joint. Pulsed current may also be used.
Automatic circumferential or orbital Gas Tungsten Arc Welding is also used to weld pipe and tube.
Power piping, Air piping, Refrigeration piping, Chemical industry process piping, and Nuclear power piping are some of the different industries that apply the Gas Tungsten Arc Welding process for welding pipe and tubing. Vacuum jacketed piping and pressure piping are a couple of cases where critical welding is required.
Nuclear Power Facilities :
Critical welding in the construction and repair of nuclear power facilities is required. Both manual and automatic methods are employed for many nuclear applications because of their precise control of the welding.
Pressure Vessels, Boilers, and Heat Exchangers :
Gas Tungsten Arc Welding has a wide range of applications in the pipe and tube industry for the welding of pressure vessels, boilers, and heat exchangers. It is employed where full fusion welding is made from one side, without the use of permanent backing rings, and on girth butt welds with a smooth internal contour. Adequate mechanical strength and corrosion resistance for a particular service encountered can be obtained by choosing the correct filler metal and welding conditions.
Aerospace :
The Gas Tungsten Arc Welding process is the major welding process used in the aerospace industry. Aircraft, spacecraft, and launch vehicles are a few of what’s included in this industry. Some of the metals welded include aluminum, nickel, stainless steel, magnesium, and super alloys. Both the manual and automatic methods are employed in this industry. Pulsed current is also used extensively in this industry. Just about all critical welds made in this industry are done by TIG and a highly skilled welder.
Ships :
The Gas Tungsten Arc Welding process is applied in the ship-building industry because different materials like aluminum, molybdenum, and stainless steel are used. There is a lot of applications in this industry for the welding of stainless steel and aluminum.
Transportation :
The Gas Tungsten Arc Welding process is used somewhat in the automotive and railroad industries. It is used mainly for the welding of non-ferrous metals, maintenance, and for small components. Fabrication of aluminum fuel tanks is one application used in this industry.
In the railroad industry, several of the interior components are made of aluminum, stainless steel, monel, and copper are sometimes welded by this process. Some maintenance and repair of passenger trains is also performed.
Another area of use for this process is contractor work. If you have the equipment and skill you can charge anywhere from – 5 per hour. I personally know a person who’s company charges per hour for TIG aluminum jobs and he gets it. If you don’t have the equipment, you could always try to go to work for a contractor. TIG welding is a very rewarding profession, and they always need skilled welders.
So my advice to you is, if you want to be a TIG welder, get some training ( I recommend The Hobart Institute of Welding Technology in Troy, Ohio ) They’re the best! Maybe, if you could afford it, get a certification in GTAW while you go to school there. Apply yourself, and learn as much as you can. Then be aggressive, and go out there and get a job in the TIG welding industry. Make sure to keep your attendance perfect, if at all possible. Employers want you to come to work and be on time. If you do this you’ll be on your way to an interesting and fun career that is rewarding.

Welding may seem like a generations-old tradition, but in actuality, it is an occupation that is booming. Thorough Training is Important for Welding Safety and Skill
When people want to search for welder training, it is necessary to note a few things. Training should not only include courses that explain the mechanics of welding, but courses that delve into the safety of welding, as well as hands-on training. The training for welding should include information on both the technical knowledge of a variety of metals and techniques combined with the many types of welding, metals and standards of welding. Training should eventually lead to an Ohio welder Associates Degree.
A degree, such as an Ohio welder Associate’s degree, usually is referred to as Welding Technology. Although the market is growing, the outlook for those without the degree is not as enthusiastic. Salary usually pays well above minimum wage and as long as they have this revered degree, the job market will be open to them.
Welding Inspection School
For individuals more interested in welding inspectors, there is always Ohio welding inspector schools. The requirements include a high-school diploma, and from there, formal training at an Ohio welding inspector school is needed in order to become certified. Although many Ohio schools have certification for just welding, in order to be a welding inspector there needs to be Certified Associate Welding Inspector courses or CAWI courses.
There are some other things needed specifically for a welding inspector. Although vocational schools have courses and hands-on training, apprenticeships, internships and at least 4 years of experience are needed to have before going for this degree. According to the American Welding Society, classes should be taken such as welding Code Clinics and inspection seminars to prepare for the CAWI examination. From there, future associate welding inspectors need an average score of 72% to pass the exam. If the person does not pass, 40 more hours of professional training are required to take the exam again.

Welding has long been an important part of the economy of many cities across the globe. There are few truly vital non-medical trades in existence. The world would survive without computer tech support specialists, stock brokers, and gentlemen’s clubs. Large modern cities would have a much harder time surviving without welders and similar tradesmen.

If you’re interested in learning welding then the best plan is to look into Ohio welding schools and see what’s available. Ohio welder training is available in many places, but the important thing is to find a program that offers high quality training. If you can’t find a well respected welding school in your area, it would probably be worth it to get outside of your current area for your welding education. After all, you go to welding school to build you skills, and if you don’t get the proper training, what were you going to school for?

Ohio Receives $13 Million For Solar and Wind Projects
Cleveland, Ohio – Governor Ted Strickland today announced that 25 Ohio projects will receive more than million in grant awards funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act’s State Energy Program.
“We are shaping Ohio’s future by strengthening our advanced energy economy today. Supporting the growing wind and solar industries creates jobs, creates energy and reduces costs for hard-working Ohioans,” Strickland said. “These Recovery Act-funded projects take the state another vital step toward our goal of making Ohio a world center for advanced energy.”
US Representatives Betty Sutton and Marcia Fudge, Ohio Department of Development Director Lisa Patt-McDaniel, the governor’s energy advisor Mark Shanahan, and other community leaders and elected officials joined the governor and Lincoln Electric Chairman and CEO John Stropki for today’s announcement in Cleveland. Lincoln Electric will receive a million grant for its wind turbine installation project.
These renewable energy awards are the first to be awarded from Ohio’s million State Energy Program, which was accepted by the U.S. Department of Energy on June 26th.
“We are excited to have this opportunity under Ohio’s energy program to demonstrate the value of wind energy by investing in our own installation,” Stropki said. “This project is a continuation of other Lincoln EHS programs and green initiatives currently under way in our manufacturing operations to improve our costs and protect our environment. Not only will the wind project provide long-term benefits by reducing our energy costs, it will also showcase the unique benefits that Lincoln products and welding solutions provide to wind tower manufacturers to improve their quality and lower their costs.”
Public and private entities will use the funds to install wind electric, solar electric and solar thermal technologies at businesses, schools, parks and other public locations throughout Ohio.
“Ohio is an impact state for advanced energy job creation potential,” Patt-McDaniel said. “Our state’s manufacturing strengths, logistics capabilities, skilled workforce, and competitive business environment make Ohio a major competitor in the growth of our nation’s new energy economy.”
Proposals for Deploying Renewable Energy: Wind and Solar component of the program were accepted beginning August 25, 2009. Projects submitted were selected through a competitive review process based on several criteria: project readiness and ability to be completed within 12 months, a matching investment of at least 50 percent, and direct economic impacts to create and retain jobs in Ohio.
Governor Strickland acknowledged that these awards would not have been possible without the support of members of Ohio’s Congressional delegation and President Barack Obama for the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
“The Wind and Solar Awards afford Cuyahoga County and the State of Ohio an opportunity to create jobs in a burgeoning field. By investing in energy, we will promote an industry of endless possibilities, create sustainable jobs, and retrain workers to enter this expanding ‘green’ workforce,” said Representative Fudge (OH-11).
“Today’s announcement of million for the solar energy project that will be installed in Akron Metro’s facility is great news,” Representative Sutton said. “It is projected that these solar panels could save up to 33 percent in energy costs. The projects announced today will strengthen Ohio’s advanced and renewable energy sectors, facilitate job creation and retention, and reduce energy costs along with greenhouse gas emissions.”
Awarded projects meet the federal goals of the Recovery Act’s State Energy Program to accelerate renewable energy development in Ohio by creating or preserving jobs and reduce energy usage and greenhouse gas emissions.
“Expanding the use of wind and solar energy across Ohio will create jobs in an expanding global market, positioning Ohio for growth for years to come,” Shanahan said. “Recovery Act resources are helping Ohio communities make their own renewable energy while accelerating market-driven job creation in our state.”

Archbold Area Local Schools (Fulton County) – 0,000 to install a 500 kW wind turbine and integrate the technology as a teaching tool in the classroom. Cuyahoga County Board of Commissioners (Cuyahoga County) – million to install a 600 kW wind turbine at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds in conjunction with a career and new energy training center. Green City Growers Cooperative (Cuyahoga County) – million to install a 1.5 MW wind turbine to power a 5.35 acre greenhouse and a 40,000 square-foot facility that will process fresh produce for Northeast Ohio. Huron-Wind LLC and City of Huron (Erie County) – 0,500 to install a 100 kW wind turbine. Kenston Local School District (Geauga County) – 0,500 to install a 600 kW wind turbine and integrate the technology as a teaching tool in the classroom. Lincoln Electric Company (Cuyahoga County) – million to install a 2.5 MW wind turbine at its manufacturing facility.
Pettisville Local Schools (Fulton County) – 0,000 to install a 500 kW wind turbine and integrate the technology as a teaching tool in the classroom.
Toledo Electric Joint Apprentice and Training Committee (Lucas County) – 0,000 to install a 100 kW wind turbine to serve as a training tool for 1,000 apprentices.
SOLAR ELECTRIC PROJECTS
Affinity Building Systems, Inc (Montgomery County) – 2,684 to install a 105 kW solar photovoltaic system. City of Cincinnati, Duke Energy Convention Center (Hamilton County) – 2,937 to install a 93 kW photovoltaic array rooftop system at the Duke Energy Convention Center.
City of Cincinnati Parks (Hamilton County) – 1,418 to install a total of 170 kW solar photovoltaic systems at 13 sites in the park system.
Forest City Residential Management Inc., Midtown Towers (Cuyahoga County) – million to install a 350 kW solar photovoltaic rooftop system on three of The Midtown Towers’ residential building complexes. Greater Cincinnati Water Works (Hamilton County) – 5,655 to install a 280 kW photovoltaic solar array rooftop system. Hull & Associates Inc, Bedford Office (Cuyahoga County) – 6,254 to install a 93 kW solar photovoltaic system at its office building in Northeast Ohio. Hull & Associates Inc, PNA Solar Project (Wood County) – 0,782 to install a 250 kW solar array project on Pilkington North America, Inc’s (PNA) Plant 21 site. IGS Energy (Franklin County) – 1,089 to install a 93 kW solar photovoltaic system on their corporate office building. Jewish Community Federation of Cleveland (Cuyahoga County) – 7,479 to install a 76 kW solar photovoltaic rooftop system at an office building built to LEED certification. METRO Regional Transit Authority (Summit County) – million to install a 488 kW solar photovoltaic rooftop system located on its central bus barn. Ohio Department of Mental Health (ODMH), Summit Facility (Hamilton County) – 2,932 to install a 232.65 kW solar photovoltaic rooftop system. Solar Vision LLC, Athens City Community Center (Athens County) – 1,637 to install a 220 kW photovoltaic solar array system on four carport structures in the parking lot of the Athens City Community Center. Solar Vision LLC, Bexley Police (Franklin County) – 5,328 to install a 117 kW photovoltaic array system on four new carport structures in the parking lot. Toledo Museum of Art (Lucas County) – 2,264 to install a 100 kW solar rooftop system. Toledo Zoo (Lucas County) – 6,837 to install a 103 kW solar system.
