High-Density Polyethylene

High-density polyethylene (HDPE) is a type of plastic made from petroleum. Since subsequent melting and shaping can remould this material, it is classified as a polyethylene thermoplastic. It can also be joined in segments when welded or machined. However, it does not accept adhesives very well. Also known as polyethylene high-density (PEHD), products made of high-density polyethylene are marked by the imprint of the number “2″ surrounded by the Möbius strip recognized as the universal recycling symbol.

As the name implies, high-density polyethylene is denser than most other polymer plastics, namely low-density polyethylene. This is due to its crystallization structure occurring in a linear fashion rather than branching out to form long chains of polyethylene. Instead, the lack of branching results in its carbon molecules bonding with more hydrogen molecules. This allows the final product to possess greater tensile strength, even though it is lighter than water. It also makes high-density polyethylene highly resistant to acids and solvents.

The production of high-density polyethylene does not happen by accident or natural event, however. In fact, the lack of branching during the polymerisation process is deliberately induced by the addition of a type of reagent known as a Ziegler-Natta catalyst. Usually, these catalysts are derived from titanium compounds.

Since high-density polyethylene is so durable and chemically non-reactive, it has numerous applications in various industries. It is used in many different types of packaging containers, such as milk and laundry detergent bottles, as well as plastic grocery bags. It is also found in storage systems designed to store chemicals and fuels. In fact, high-density polyethylene is used to produce materials to act as chemical barriers, such as liners that are placed under landfills to help prevent soil and groundwater contamination. One of the most common uses of this material is in the manufacturing of wood plastic composites to make furniture, flooring, fencing, and landscaping materials.

In terms of environmental impact, products made of high-density polyethylene do not readily biodegrade in landfills. Such products can be recycled, though, albeit at the risk of losing some of its original tensile strength. Since this material is constructed of hydrogen and carbon, being subjected to high heat merely results in the release of water and carbon dioxide. However, additives, such as fire retardants, UV-stabilizers, and dyes, can produce other toxins.

Panel Cutting Machines

Panel Cutting Machines is a tool that is used to remove material from the workpiece by means of shear deformation. Cutting may be accomplished by single-point or multipoint tools. Single-point tools are used in turning, shaping, planning and similar operations, and remove material by means of one cutting edge. Milling and drilling tools are often multipoint tools. Grinding tools are also multipoint tools. Each grain of abrasive functions as a microscopic single-point cutting edge (although of high negative rake angle), and shears a tiny chip.

 

Cutting tools must be made of a material harder than the material which is to be cut, and the tool must be able to withstand the heat generated in the metal-cutting process. Also, the tool must have a specific geometry, with clearance angles designed so that the cutting edge can contact the workpiece without the rest of the tool dragging on the workpiece surface. The angle of the cutting face is also important, as is the flute width, number of flutes or teeth, and margin size. In order to have a long working life, all of the above must be optimized, plus the speeds and feeds at which the tool is run.

 

è Different types of the Cutting tools

 

Single-point cutting tools can be classified by their motion as linear or rotary, depending on whether they rotate while cutting. Linear cutting tools include tool bits (single-point cutting tools) and broaches. Rotary cutting tools include drill bits, countersinks and counterbores, taps and dies, milling cutters, and reamers. Other cutting tools, such as bandsaw blades and fly cutters, combine aspects of linear and rotary motion.

Cutting tools are often designed with inserts or replaceable tips (tipped tools). In these, the cutting edge consists of a separate piece of material, either brazed, welded or clamped on to the tool body. Common materials for tips include tungsten carbide, polycrystalline diamond, and cubic boron nitride. Tools using inserts include milling cutters (endmills, fly cutters), tool bits, and saw blades.

Cutting tools are made using a variety of materials and the selection of a cutting tool material depends on a variety of factors.

 

To produce quality parts, a cutting tool must have three characteristics:

 

* Hardness — hardness and strength at high temperatures.

* Toughness — toughness, so that tools don’t chip or fracture.

* Wear resistance — having acceptable tool life before needing to be replaced.

 

Cutting tool materials can be divided into two main categories: stable and unstable.

 

Unstable materials (usually steels) are substances that start at a relatively low hardness point and are then heat treated to promote the growth of hard particles (usually carbides) inside the original matrix, which increases the overall hardness of the material at the expense of some its original toughness. Since heat is the mechanism to alter the structure of the substance and at the same time the cutting action produces a lot of heat, such substances is inherently unstable under machining conditions.

 

Stable materials (usually tungsten carbide) are substances that remain relatively stable under the heat produced by most machining conditions, as they don’t attain their hardness through heat. They wear down due to abrasion, but generally don’t change their properties much during use.

 

Most stable materials are hard enough to break before flexing, which makes them very fragile. To avoid chipping at the cutting edge, most tools made of such materials are finished with a slightly blunt edge, which results in higher cutting forces due to an increased shear area. Fragility combined with high cutting forces results in most stable materials being unsuitable for use in anything but large, heavy and stiff machinery.

Today we start with basics…What is Welding?  We have to start with

What is Welding?
Wikipedia defines welding as “a fabrication process that joins
materials, usually metals.” This is done by melting the part of the
materials to be joined and adding some additional molten joining
material. When the molten material cools, it forms a strong bond or
joint.

Welding is the most widely practiced way of joining metals together
due to the efficiency and economy of the process. It has been
estimated that approximately 50% of the Gross National Product of
the USA arises from activities that are in some for or another
related, perhaps remotely, to welding. As an example, farming may
appear to have nothing to do with welding, but the equipment the
framer uses to grow and harvest his crops will have used welding in
their manufacturing process.

Until the advent of the 20th century, welding was confined to
blacksmith shops where two pieces of metal were heated to very high
temperatures in a forge and then hammered together until the
joining occurred. This is what is called forge welding.

With the introduction of electricity into industrial processes,
welding became both quicker and easy, and also more economical.
Today there are 4 types of welding techniques that are commonly used.

- The most basic for is Arc Welding where the parts to be joined
together are brought into contact with strong electrical current
and heated. The molten parts are then joined together to form a
weld. This is the low technology end of welding in its cheapest and
least sophisticated form.

- Gas Welding is generally used for repair work especially in the
case hollow items like tubes and pipes. Hot gas is forced onto the
surfaces to be welded. This procedure requires the parts to be
subjected to less heat and is suitable for material that may be
damaged by exposure to high temperature. For this reason it is used
in the jewelery industry which has to work with soft metal with
low melting points.

- Resistance Welding requires that an additional sheet of material
is used to cover the pieces that are to be welded together. This
provides great strength to a weld, but the process requires
expensive equipment and also the use of additional material to
encase the weld which makes it expensive and not suitable for all
applications.

- Laser Welding is the most modern technology available. High
intensity lasers can be tightly focused and produce controllable
heat on the surfaces to be welded very quickly. This is perfect for
material which can be damaged by prolonged exposure to extreme
heat. Laser welding is very accurate and can be used to produce
even the smallest of welds. However, because of the high capital
cost involved in purchasing this equipment, the cost of welding is
also high.

Although the perception of welding is that of a simple process of
heating and joining, it is a high technology industry with huge
amounts being spent of research and development to find stronger,
more accurate and cheaper methods. The welding process plays a big
role in metallurgy with a constant effort underway to find newer
and more weld friendly alloys.
