The Blackberry Torch – Is It Worth Buying?

A quick look at the recently released Blackberry Torch set our hearts burning with desire. Especially for business executives, the design of the smartphone is sufficient to dazzle your eyes and trigger your curiosity.

The Blackberry Torch carries the distinctive trademark of Blackberry mobile phones through its dashing black color. However, a combination of the elegant curved edges and the white and dark orange colors results in a modern look that will easily capture the attention of the younger professionals and teenagers. The Torch is a similar size to the Blackberry Bold 9700. Although there is a thickness difference of 2.5mm, you’ll benefit from a full-sized touchscreen in addition to a slide out keyboard.

The Blackberry Torch features a full-sized 3.2 inch capacitive touchscreen with 16M colors. Although the resolution of 360 x 480 pixels is not as appealing as the other high-end smartphones, it works fine with the mainstream users who are non-movie fanatics. To be fair, the full-sized touchscreen and physical keyboard combination carries a huge advantage over majority of Blackberry smartphones. The full screen web browsing experience and “Pinch and zoom” capability will drive most Blackberry fans crazy.

RIM deserves praise for successfully introducing the visual experience without sacrificing any of their key advantages. As with the previous Blackberry smartphones, you’ll find the optical trackpad and their signature QWERTY keyboard. The familiar keyboard effectively improves your email and text messaging capabilities, just like the other Blackberry smartphones. Just before you draft your email, slide the display open to reveal the full QWERTY keyboard.

The Blackberry Torch comes along with GPS, 3G (HSDPA and HSUPA), Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and a 5 MP camera. It is a surprise that great emphasis was placed on the Torch’s camera. It allows video recording (640 x 480), continuous autofocus, LED flash, image stabilization and 11 camera modes. The only missing capability is HD video recording. The phone also includes 4GB of internal memory and supports up to 32GB of maximum capacity (256MB on the BB9700). As for the battery life, you’ll get 5 hours and 40 minutes of talktime and 30 hours of music.

Although the qualities of the new Torch sends Blackberry fans screaming for joy, RIM is definitely unsatisfied. Why else would they introduce the Blackberry 6 OS to the smartphone? The new OS6 features comprehensive changes that will place immense pressure on Blackberry’s competitors. Some of the changes come from feedback that “the Blackberry doesn’t render websites accurately” and “the menus look outdated”. As a result, there is new web browser that features tabbed browsing and an intuitive graphical menu that comes along with modern icons. There is also a social feed application that constantly displays new tweets and Facebook status updates in a timeline.

The Blackberry version 6 OS wouldn’t be complete without the ingenious universal search function. Simply by keying in your keywords, your Blackberry Torch will be able to search and bring your required app, email, file or message to you. Just imagine the amount of time you can save!

It is needless to mention how much difference the Blackberry 6 OS has made to the Torch. Although critics might comment that the Torch is still not a mean multimedia machine, it is by far the best Blackberry business phone with extended multimedia capabilities. What do you think?

How to TIG Weld Aluminum and Get the Stack of Dimes Look, Even With an Old TIG Welding Machine

Wanna learn how to TIG weld aluminum?

First you need a decent TIG welding machine. Not a great one, just a decent one. Already got one? You might have an old Synrowave 300 or a DialArc, an old Hobart CyberTIG or you might have a brand new Miller Dynasty 200DX.

Know what? It doesn’t really matter. The same principles apply. If you have an old as dirt TIG welding machine, you can still make good aluminum TIG welds. Weld beads that look like a stack of dimes.

First lets look at machine settings:

Set the polarity to A/c (alternating currrent)

- Make sure to set the high frequency to continuous

- Set the amperage to about one and one half amps per one thousandths of inch of thickness (up to about 250 amps then things change quite a bit)

- Set both the contactor and amperage switches to the remote positon

- Set the argon or argon/helium torch shielding gas to around 15 cfh. (if you are using a #7 cup) less if the cup is smaller

- Notice I said argon or argon/helium? Argon is not the only game in town. In fact, if you TIG weld any aluminum over about .063″ thick, adding helium to the mix makes a huge difference.

Now lets talk tungsten electrodes:

- 2% thoriated have received a lot of bad press for the radioactivity issue but they do work

- 2% lanthanated electrodes are a really good all purpose electrode…good for TIG welding aluminum as well as steel

- Use the smallest electrode that will get the job done without quivering at max amperage.

Remote amperage control…you need a foot pedal. Period.

- Once all the settings are ok, and assuming you are welding on 1/8″ thick aluminum, grab a piece of 4043 filler rod in 3/32 diameter (rarely will you use a rod as thick or thicker than the metal you are welding)

- Extend the electrode tip about 1/4″ past the tip of the TIG welding torch cup and pre purge the gas by tapping the foot pedal.

- Hold the torch like a big first grade pencil. Touch the tip of the tungsten to the metal and then pull it back about 1/8 inch. Flip your helmet down and press the pedal to initiate the arc.

- Don’t melt the aluminum right away though, watch the black stuff cook away from the arcs cleaning action before you melt the metal. Then press the pedal far enough to create a puddle that is about 3-4 times the thickness of the metal you are welding.

Now comes the part on how to achieve the “stack of dimes” look. You get that by adding the same amount of rod and by moving the torch the same distance each time you add rod. Add rod, Step ahead 1/8 inch,Add rod, Step ahead 1/8 inch,Add rod, Step ahead 1/8 inch, lather rinse repeat. If you do this consistently, you will get evenly spaced ripples that look like a stack of dimes.

Of course it looks different from underneath the welding helmet and it is harder than it sounds, but this is really how you do it. All that is left is the doing. It takes practice and lots of quality seat time.

Different types of welder machines are available such as mig welder, tig welder, on board welder, reconditioned welder, aluminum welder, steel welder and metal welder are used for the process of welding. Welding fumes are dangerous, so the weldor should be protected with welding gears such as welding helmets, welding masks, welding gloves and with proper welding accessories. Welding guns and welding torches are important to weldor and the weldor should have proper control over it.

Consumables available for welding are tig consumables, mig consumables, plasma cutter consumables, tungsten consumables and welding accessories is an optional tool that are attached to welding machines and it is used for the better performance of welding.
