Pipe welding is no easy task.After all, you are usually using it to join very large pieces of metal or plastic together–sometimes, so that very powerful chemicals and gases can pass through them.However, pipe welding is an incredibly popular way to manufacture things because it is the most cost-effective way to join pipes together.It can be done for a variety of projects, both big and small.

If you want to become a pipe welding pro, you will have to start by understanding the ins and outs of some of the basics, like:

1.Butt welding

If you need to join two piece of metal or plastic together, than you need to know about butt welding.In fact, butt welding has become a popular welding process because it is easy to do and it rarely requires any kind of post-welding work like other welding techniques do.

During this process, the two pieces are laid side-by-side and welded along a single seam.If your butt welding is done correctly, you will never see a seam, and you will never see any type of brittleness or corrosion develop.  Instead, it will just look like these two pieces naturally fit together!

2.CNC machining equipment

An abbreviation for “computer numerical control”, CNC machining equipment is vital to the pipe welding world.This equipment can be pre-programmed with a computer to do the work, instead of having an actual human being do it.CNC machining equipment can work faster than a person can, and it can simulate all of the movements that a human can make –by being able to move machines, equipment, and tools in virtually every direction.

As an added benefit, CNC machining equipment it never gets tired, like an actual person does.In fact, these machines can run 24/7 if you need them to! They will literally keep running until you tell them to stop.

3.High pressure fittings

Available in virtually any variety – from elbows, to couplings, to crosses, to tees, to filters – high pressure fittings are another important part of pipe welding.

By having fittings that can easily adapt to very high amounts of pressure, you can rest easy knowing that they will be able to hold their own against fast-moving fluids, oils, and chemicals.When you have weaker fittings, flowing fluids can break them down– leading to leaks and spills.  Instead, high pressure fittings can be used to connect pipes together in all sorts of situations.

Few Basics of Brazing in the Kitchen!

Last week, an aluminum nozzle got hit and apparently got ruptured in my kitchen, causing a lot of inconvenience in work. So I had to get it replaced as quickly as possible, but there was no time to go out the next day and the nearby shops were closed due to a holiday. So I decided to get it repaired by calling a professional to repair leak, but no one was available on this end either. So I started making calls for Aluminum cracked repair specialists, but again, it seemed as if bad luck was hovering upon me that day, I couldn’t find anyone appropriate for a job. So I went to my neighbor to ask if they knew anyone or anything which could help me out as it was pretty urgent to fix the nozzle. Luckily, there was a guy sitting there who knew much about all these repairs, so he volunteered to look up. Overwhelmed, and hopeful, I led him into the kitchen where he just smirked as if the damage was so minor and anyone could fix it! He went back home and came back in a few minutes with a bag full of tools.

While he was on his work, I noticed he was using a very different kind of a rod, quite different than the other professionals I had seen using. I asked him why it looked so different, to which he replied that it was a special kind of a ‘brazing rod’ which made the work easier and faster. Another advantage to use it was that it made the metal more strong in comparison to other welding machines or rods. What more, it could also be used on alloys, you could also do brazing on other metals, for instance, it worked great for cast iron brazing etc.

A few points he told me about the whole welding-brazing process was that there should be a lot of cleanliness to be maintained in the process and one must make sure that no carbon is sticking around. Thus, it is pivotal to not only clean the entire surface, but brush it as well. Also, MIG welding or Metal Inert Gas welding is a great method in which inert gases (that is, the gases which don’t react with other gases) such as helium and argon are used; these gases act as a shield outside creating a protective atmosphere.

All this information was nice to learn while he did the job in a jiffy. I am also planning to take a few lessons! Self help works great!

Basics of shielded metal arc welding or SMAW

SMAW is commonly referred as shielded metal arc welding. It is also called as Manual Metal Arc (MMA). A consumable electrode which is coated with flux is used to make welds in this type of welding. The electric arc is formed by either using alternating or direct current as a power. This arc is formed between the metal and the electrode to weld. Shielding gas is formed when the flux which was coated on the electrode begins to disintegrate and produce vapors. This gas protects from air contamination too. Here are some basics that a welder ought to know when it comes to arc welding;

Electricity in direct current flows from negative to positive. Direct current is used to produce smooth welding. Electricity passes to and from negative and positive on a sine wave. This results in an irregular passage of current. In turn this results in more spatters.
Reverse polarity is called as Direct Current Electrode Positive (DCEP). Direct Current Electrode Negative (DCEN) is called as straight polarity. Electricity passes with great concentration into the welding rod’s tip to provide just a quarter less that it is capable in DCEP. This gives great incursion. Thick steel pieces can be weld easily with DCEP.

But in DCEN current passes out of the welding rod. There is one third of heat that is concentrated on the rod. This eventually results in less incursive capability. Therefore serves to the best power for thin steel.

There are scores of people who believe that DCEN gives great penetration than DCEP. But with experience you should be able to take sides on your own.

There are a few weld defects that SMAW can cause. They are slag inclusion, undercut and porosity. They are called defects as they weaken the joints where welds are made. Porosity is the holes that appear on the welds. This may be due to gas or steam.

- Slag inclusion happens you don’t chip off the slag. A welder should always get rid of the slag.
- Undercut is the primary mistake that should not happen while welding.
- It is very harmful to weld with exposed skin. Radiations from ultra violet rays can be brutal to your skin. They are capable to blister the cornea of your eyes. Exposing skin while welding leads to skin cancer. The primary reason why heavy welding coats are avoided by welders is because they are uncomfortable. It is not a great reason when compared to the harm that welding can pose on your body.
- Spatter is the molten metal drops that get stuck to the metal all around the place your weld. Spatter will chip off by itself.
