What is a decent first welder?

welder
BuckarooBanzai asked:

I’ve never welded and would like learn to do some very light welding. An example is little pins on my electric panel cover. The little metal pieces have broken, so I need to tack nails or the like on the inside of the removed panel cover to hold it on. So, I’m not interested in being able to weld a trailer hitch to a frame….but who knows later????

So what do I realkly need to do little things? I do have 240 volts in the shop (30A), and don’t want to just buy the cheapest little 110 box…but neither do I need a monster welder capable of welding 1″ steel. I see several models at Harbor Freight. Are any of theirs any good? What should I look for? Thanks.
Duh, it is the panel cover…that I can take off and set outside. Pretty poor thought to weld it in place…but I suppose there are some out here who would try it… No offense taken… But answer the question, not the side comment, please…

I\’m having a problem with excessive weld splatter from my MIG welder?

welder
JASON S asked:

I have a Lincoln xp135 and I am having a lot of problems with weld splatter that I have never had. I have tried various power and wire feed settings, and now I’m wondering if it is due to low ArCO2 in my tank? Any thoughts? I am a decent welder, but it is a hobby, so I don’t do it enough to be second nature. I appreciate any help.

I have a campbell hausfeld welder and the switch broke?

welder
chad w asked:

My switch broke on my campbell hausfeld welder, the switch is shorted out and melted. I was wondering if my welder is still ok?
Or could it have shorted out the welder? It is an arc welder. 120 volts. Also could I use just a regular toggle switch on it?
Or do I have to buy the original rocker switch for it?

What type of welder would you buy for general home handyman use? Stick or Mig?

welder
J and M asked:

Would be welding up to 5mm (1\4 inch) thick steel plate max. Have used both but am finding the costs of MIG welders to be too prohibitive.

Isn\’t there a way to make a magnet with a welder?

welder
djb3577 asked:

I once had a very powerful magnet, it measured 1″ x 1″ x 5″, more or less. I wonder if it was made with a welder? I think I heard somewhere that a person could make a normal piece of steel into a magnet by attaching a welder’s leads to it for a specific amount of time, and in a certain manner. Is this possible? If so, what type of welder do you think a person should use? I just want the magnet to play around with, maybe use at work if the need arose. Plus, I like fooling around with things like this. Thank you to anyone that spends their precious time answering my question.
Thank you William B for your time spent answering my question! I will try it. I wonder, what setting did you use one the welder? Was it a/c or d/c? Also, why do you say to set the welder down to it’s lowest setting? Is it because of the strain and heat the welder would be going through? I would think that the higher the amp setting, the stronger the magnetic pull would be on my magnet. What do you think?
