Use Caution When Dealing With Gas Cylinders

Compressed gas cylinders and cryogenic cylinders are rugged vessels used to store, transport, and ship dangerous gases safely. Both types of these cylinders come in different sizes. Even though these containers are built to be rugged they should be handled with care because if they are damaged due to rough handling they can become hazardous. These vessels can sustain physical damage if they are fall over, dropped, or exposed to heat. It is not only the container that can sustain damage but also the valves on it can become damaged as well, allowing for the gases to leak out which can be particularly dangerous if they are not stored in a well-ventilated area. These vessels are not used just one time, but refilled and used again and again though they are required to undergo periodic inspection to make sure they are safe.

Compressed gas cylinders, which also may be referred to as bottle gases, is a pressure vessel used to store gases at above atmospheric pressure. These containers are used by many laboratory and industrial companies for a variety of different operations. They are stored at an extremely high pressure (up to 2,500 pounds per square inch gauge — also referred to as psig). A sudden release of gases from this type of vessel can turn it into a flying missile depending on what it contains that has been known to penetrate a cement wall if it is handled improperly. Depending on the particular gas it may be flammable or combustible, corrosive, explosive, poisonous, or a combination thereof.

Cryogenic cylinders have a double-walled, vacuum vessel with multi-layer insulation in the vacuum space, a stainless steel welded body, and stabilizing pressure safety valves. These containers are also referred to as liquid containers or dewars. These vessels are designed for the purpose of storage, transporting, and dispensing. Most of them are capable of holding either liquid or gas, though some can only handle liquid depending on your needs.

These containers are used to ship, store, and dispense products such as nitrogen, oxygen, argon, helium, hydrogen, carbon dioxide nitrous oxide, krypton, neon, methane, and xenon. These products are used by hospitals, pharmaceutical manufacturers, and industries or research facilities that deal with biology, chemicals, food items, ships, and scientific labs.

The United States Department of Transportation (US DOT) is the governmental regulatory body that oversees the cylinders and sets the necessary specifications. Based on the standards set by the US DOT each container must have the following forms of identification: serial number, month and year date of manufacture, a cylinder ring that displays the original owner, retesting markings, a bar code label for tracking purposes, the manufacturer’s inspection marking, and the empty weight of the vessel. US DOT Title 49, Section 173 of the United States Code of Federal Regulations (49 CFR 173) requires that placards indicating a hazardous material must be used when shipping compressed gases in containers. In Canada, the governmental regulatory body that oversees the proper handling of these containers and sets the necessary specifications is Transportation Canada (TC).

Stewart Wrighter recently met with a skilledcompressed gas cylinders installer for an engineering project he is working on. His wife orderedcryogenic cylinders to be installed in her veterinary clinic.

Aluminum Gas Welding vs. TIG Welding

Aluminum gas welding can be accomplished with gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) and it can also be used to weld steel, as well as other metals. GTAW is also called tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding. Welding steel is one of the easier jobs when using rig welding, but there are a number of factors, which make it much harder to weld aluminum.

From cleanliness, arc length, machine settings, welding with a dirty tungsten electrode, filler rod angle, type of electrode, torch angle and size of electrode – you have to be extra-careful with all of these factors when you tig weld aluminum.

Here we go over these factors and how you have to be much more careful with aluminum than with steel.

- Make sure that the settings for your machine are correct. Set your machine to use alternating current and the high frequency switch should be at continuous mode otherwise it will make the arc stutter.

]]>

- A piece or object of aluminum left outside is likely to be highly oxidized after having come in contact with the elements. That should be weld only after thoroughly cleaning it – otherwise it will burn or weld extremely fast.

- Arc length – it is important to keep the arc at just the correct length. Arc lengths too long or too short, both should be avoided with aluminum. Too short the length, you your metal will jump on your electrode, damaging that and you. Too long a length and the heat will not be pinpointed enough to be of proper use.

- Keep your electrode clean. A dirty electrode will make the weld sooty – taking any fun out of the job you may have been having.

- Do not use pure tungsten electrodes with the new types of tig inverters to weld aluminum. The old types could use them, but not these new ones.

- You should keep the 1/16″, 3/32″ and 1/8″ sized tungsten electrodes within easy reach when working with aluminum. With steel it is one size fits all policy, where you can go with a 3/32″ tungsten for most of the jobs. But with aluminum, you need different electrodes depending on the thickness of the aluminum.

Aluminum gas welding just needs to be done with more care than other types of welding. Keep all these factors in mind and you will have your aluminum boat repaired or your ladder fixed in the best possible manner.

Gas Equipment For Top-Notch Welding Quality

Gas welding is a kind of welding development that uses a fire that is feed by a under pressure gas fuel. More than a few different kinds of fuel gases second-hand used depending on job work, accessibility, and price.

Gas welding has been aggressively used from several decades, and even though it has been principally replaced by curve welding for many industrial job works, it is still respected for its quality and techniques.

Gas welding processes center on a torch that generates the welding flare. Expert welder can regulate the quantity of gas living being used by the set on fire and the oxygen used to supply the flare. By scheming the ratio of the gas and oxygen, the welder can generate different flames with different characteristics, depending on the material being welded. The welder uses a filler rod covered with instability to add substances to the weld and to displace the air from the weld location. Similar to all welding processes, the welder must be dressed in protective clothes, together with a welding mask, gloves, and other wearing accessories.

]]>

Earlier than acetylene could be successfully created and controlled, coal gas and hydrogen be consumed for gas welding. Today, gas welding is executed by means of propane, petrol, and hydrogen. Oxy-acetylene is the most frequent gas amalgamation used by gas welding equipment processes. Oxy-acetylene welding combines oxygen gas and acetylene gas to create the flame. Acetylene endow with one the hottest flare of all gas welding fuels, and can consequently be used to weld or cut substantial substances. Nevertheless, acetylene is pricier than a large amount welding fuel gases.

Gas welding uses welding bars to initiate stuffing substance into a weld. Welding bars for gas welding are covered with an instability material that vaporizes when heat is given. Actually, the vaporized flux relocates air from the weld site so that oxides are not integrated in the weld procedure. Welding bars are obtainable in a multiplicity of substances to go with the substance of the work pieces being welded.

No electricity is required to carry out gas welding, so these systems are transferable and used in isolated places that do not have electrical sources. Nevertheless, the gases use for this category of welding is flammable and they must be stored and handled properly. Gas welding equipment does not produce as much limited to a small area heat as curve welding, and the superiority of welds created by arc welding have resulted in the turn down of gas welding as the primary welding process. However, gas welding does still stay put a significant part of welding and production houses.

Tungsten inert gas welding is a curve welding procedure, consumes the heat of an electrical curve to liquefy the metal of a job quantity to generate a connect. Nothing like metal inert gas welding, tungsten inert gas welding uses a tungsten electrode that does not liquefy and supply to the weld substance.

A TIG welder’s tools include of a TIG gas welding machine, protecting gas, typically argon; stuffing substance and protecting mechanism.

Injector Torch, Cutting Torch, and Other Metal Casting Torches Described

Oxy-fuel cutting and oxy-fuel welding can be described as the processes of using oxygen and fuel gases to either cut or weld metals. There are some striking differences between these two processes. In the first process, a cutting torch is made use of for heating ferrous metal to a temperature of around 980 degree Celsius. An oxygen stream is being trained on a hot metal that combines with iron chemically which later flows from the kerfs, or cut in the form of slag of iron oxide. In the second process, a ‘welding torch’ is made use of for welding metals.

Torches that burn the inside fuel with air (atmosphere) cannot be termed as oxy-fuel torches. They stand out owing to the use of single tank. This is because oxy-fuel cutting/welding requires oxygen, fuel, and two tanks. It’s not possible to melt some of the metals with single-tank torches. Hence, these torches can be used for brazing and soldering, but not for welding. A metal-cutting torch is better known as hot blue spanner, blue wrench, hot wrench, smoke wrench, and gas-axe.

]]>

Types of Torches: The torch can be defined as the part held and manipulated by the welder to get the weld made. It possesses a valve and connection for oxygen and the same things for fuel gas, a handle to obtain the grip, an integrating chamber (angularly set) where there occurs a mixing of oxygen and fuel gas, with a tip where formation of flame takes place. The fuel gases used along with oxygen include propylene, propane, hydrogen gas, MAPP gas, Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), and the most widely used is acetylene.

Injector Torch: It can be defined as an archetypal oxy-fuel torch, also known as an equal-pressure torch. It carries out the mixing of mere two gases. The injector torch operates in such a way that high pressure oxygen comes out of the tiny nozzle present in the torch head, and the fuel gas gets dragged towards it via the venturi effect.

Rose-bud Torch: The use of this torch is to carry out the heating of metals for straightening, bending, etc. It is generally used where a huge area requires heating. It produces a rose-bud shaped flame at the end, hence the name. This torch can carry out the function of heating small areas like rusted bolts and nuts as well. However, here, filler rod won’t be used with torch.

Cutting Torch: The head of the cutting torch is used for cutting metal. Its identification details are as follows: The inside of the torch consists of a combination of oxygen and acetylene. It helps in producing flame of a high temperature. It consists of 3 pipes going to a nozzle at 90 degree. It also contains an oxygen-blast trigger which blasts away the material during its cutting by the way of providing oxygen.

Welding Torch: The welding torch consists of either 1 or 2 pipes running towards the nozzle without oxygen-blast trigger. As the name suggests, it performs the function of welding.

Introduction To Tig Welding Method

Proper information on the welding process is necessary for those who wish to learn welding and also for those who wish to improvise their welding skills. Most often people are interested to begin a career in welding and some others would like to take their career to a new level. Basically welding is the process in which base metal parts are melted and joined using a filler material which has the same characteristics of the parent metal. Welding is conducted using different sources like gas flame, laser, electric beam etc.  There are different types of welders namely Arc welders, MIG welders, TIG welders and Gas welders. Among these types, TIG welding is considered as one of the most difficult type to learn and master.

TIG welding is considered as the most flexible type of welding as it can blend all conventional metals like Carbon and low alloy steels, stainless steel, nickel alloys, aluminum, magnesium, titanium, cobalt, and copper alloys. TIG welders otherwise known as the Tungsten Inert Gas Welders uses an arc which is created from non-consumable tungsten. The heat for the welding process is generated using electric current. This type of welding has many advantages like its high amperage allows welding of metals with great thickness. Other advantages include the concerns related to purity of metal and cleaning.

It is not at all an easy task to master TIG welding. Generally all the other welding methods allow the welder to simply manage with one hand. But this method requires intense attention and focus. The process involves great amount of concentration as the welders use both the hands to manage the welding area while adding the filler material to the surface. Moreover, it is highly equipment centric. For protecting the welding area from airborne contaminants, the welding uses inert gases such as argon. Due to this process, the welding would be clean and precise.

Right amount of precautions that are usually taken while performing any welding methods are always advised in TIG welding as it could be dangerous if performed carelessly. The welding brings in large intensity of light and if the eyes are directly exposed, it results in the burning of retina called as arc-eye. A face guard to shield the eye from direct exposure to intense levels of light is a must for all the welders. The whole body should be properly covered during welding as the exposed light carries UV radiation that is harmful to the skin.

TIG welding is usually used in the automobile and space craft industries since the finished materials and alloys created using the welding method are highly corrosion and cracking resistant even over a long period of time. Like all other types of welding, the TIG welding also becomes easier with practice. For a beginner, it is suggested that he must practice with scrap metal stock before attempting any real projects. This type of welding is highly sophisticated and is usually expensive than the other types as the beginners hesitate to buy the welding kit. However, the high price is worth as the product carries a number of benefits compared to any other.

Proper information on the welding process – Overview

Correct info on the welding process is mandatory for people that would like to learn welding and also for people that would like to improvise their welding abilities.

most frequently folk are interested to start a job in welding and some others would like to take their career to a different level.

Essentially welding is the method in which base metal parts are liquified and joined employing a filler material which has the same traits of the parent metal.

there are various kinds of welders specifically Arc welders, MIG welders, TIG welders and Gas welders. Among these types, TIG welding is regarded as one of the hardest type to learn and master.

TIG welders often known as the Tungsten Inactive Gas Welders uses an arc which is made from non-consumable tungsten. The heat for the welding process is generated using electrical current. This sort of welding has many advantages like its high amperage permits welding of metals with great thickness. Other benefits include the concerns related to pureness of metal and cleaning.

It’s not at all a straightforward task to conquer TIG welding. Sometimes all of the other welding strategies permit the welder to simply manage with one hand. The method involves great quantity of concentration as the welders use both the hands to control the welding area while adding the filler material to the surface. For safeguarding the welding area from airborne pollutants, the welding uses inactive gases like argon.

Due to this process, the welding would be clean and exact. The welding brings in huge power of light and if the eyes are immediately exposed, it leads to the burning of retina called as arc-eye. A face guard to shield the eye from actual exposure to intense levels of light is a complete must for all the welders. The entire body should be properly covered during welding as the exposed light carries UV radiation that’s dangerous to the skin. Like all other sorts of welding, the TIG welding also gets less difficult with practice. For a noob, it is recommended that he must practice with scrap metal stock before attempting any real projects. This sort of welding is highly complex and is mostly costly than the other types as the newbs hesitate to buy the welding kit. However, the elevated price is worth as the product carries a variety of benefits compared with any other.
