Learn How to Weld Metal

The average person’s impression of how metal is welded is that you simply fire-up a blow torch and run it along the edge of a metal seam to weld it together. Or they probably think you can just run that same torch across any kind of metal and cut through it, like in the safe-cracker movies. But the reality is that professional welding actually involves some fairly extensive knowledge, and is somewhat of an art form that takes many years of experience to master. Even so, if you are interested in learning how to weld metal, you may want to practice oxy-acetylene welding in addition to other types of welding. It will be a handy skill to have because it’s the best type to use on certain common welding projects, such as pipes or tubes, and when you have to use welding equipment to do repairing, bending and cutting.

Arc Welding

The most common technique used these days is “Arc Welding”. If you’re learning how to weld metal, you will definitely need to practice arc welding. Rather than using a gas torch, arc welding involves using high voltage electricity passing into the piece of metal. In Arc Welding, a spark (or “arc”) jumping across from one piece of metal to the other causes enough heat to melt metal and form a weld. This process is more desirable in most cases because it is more accurate and produces a cleaner, stronger weld. Within the category of “Arc Welding” there are actually several different methods to choose from, depending on the type of metal welding work you need to do.

Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) may be best when you have large welds or metal welding in unusual positions, where a rough weld is acceptable. With this method, the electricity runs through an electrode rod (or “stick”) which actually melts, producing the welded joint. On the other hand, MIG Welding, also know as Metal Inert Gas Welding, or Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), may be better if you are involved in a metal welding project that requires more speed. With this welding technique you don’t use rods that you have to keep replacing as they melt. Instead, you use equipment that sends the electricity through a metal tip that doesn’t melt, and a separate piece of continuous wire is fed to the tip which melts and forms the weld. TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) Welding is somewhat similar to MIG welding, but is better when working with thin materials where you need a high-quality weld and speed is not important. As you learn you will also hear of other methods, such as Flux-Cored Arc Welding (FCAW), Submerged Arc Welding (SAW), Plasma Welding, etc. But don’t worry too much about remembering all of the various techniques. Just focus on one method at a time and get to the point where you are comfortable that you know how to weld with that method before you learn something new.

Other Welding Methods

Although you will primarily be concerned with Arc Welding and Oxy-Acetylene Welding as you learn how to weld, you might hear about other types and wonder what they are, such as Resistance Welding, Energy Beam Welding and Solid-State Welding. Don’t let that overwhelm you right now. Many of those welding methods are primarily useful in large, specialized industrial applications and don’t really affect you as you learn how to weld.

Conclusion

Hopefully you now know a little more about the basic concepts that will be important to you as you learn how to weld. As you can see, although there are numerous methods, each with it’s own unique set of equipment, procedures and purposes, there are actually only a couple of basic methods you need to remember and practice. To get started learning, start practicing with an inexpensive arc welding setup. Get yourself a machine and just start experimenting with it on some scrap pieces of metal (after reading all instructions and taking all safety precautions, or course). Figure out what works, and what doesn’t. You will soon begin to develop a style that is most comfortable for you. Also, get yourself some oxy-acetylene equipment and try that type, too. With a lot of practice, you will become a good novice fairly quickly and will be able to master just about any common project you may encounter.

The Torch is the latest development to be completed by Select Group at Dubai Marina. Others include; The Point which was completed in 2009 and reaches a height of 125 metres with 27 floors and 188 apartments; and Botanica, a 41 floor development made up of 360 residential units.

Despite the difficulties faced by property developers during the global economic downturn, Select Group has reported their properties at Dubai Marina are already enjoying up to 85 percent occupancy this year.

Prices at The Torch start from US5,000 for a one bedroom apartment with a balcony and views spanning the length of the Dubai Marina and Jumeirah Beach.

Polypropylene fibers:fibrillated or monofilament?

Plastic shrinkage cracks form during the first hours after the concrete casting and they are called plastic because they happen during the plastic phase of the concrete.

 

Plastic shrinkage cracks will harm both the overall durability and the aesthetics of the concrete.

 

The main cause of the plastic shrinkage cracks formation has to do with the water transfer dynamics of the concrete mixture.

 

On one side we have the natural phenomenon of water evaporation from the concrete surface.

 

On the other side, bleed water is supplied from the inside to the surface.

 

When the rate of evaporation exceeds the rate of water supply via bleeding, plastic shrinkage cracks will form.

 

At that moment the fresh concrete doesn’t possess the necessary tensile strength to counteract the stresses due to volume shrinkage.

 

It is well acceptable that the use of polypropylene fibers is mostly advantageous to control plastic shrinkage cracks formation if all other parameters – e.g. wind, temperature, curing regime – remain the same.

 

Polypropylene fibers when added in the mix, provide a tridimensional reinforcement distributed homogenously. They will assume the role of counteracting the shrinkage tensions, defending thus the integrity of the powerless – at that very time – concrete.

 

 

* The finer the polypropylene fibers, the better the shrinkage control.

 

* The higher the dosage of polypropylene fibers, the better the shrinkage control.

 

 

Lastly, fibrillated polypropylene fibers seem to have a distinct advantage over the monofilament type polypropylene fibers with regard to shrinkage control of concrete.

Monofilament or fibrillated ?

 

Monofilament and fibrillated are the two main kinds of polypropylene fibers. Their fields of application don’t differ a lot.

 

Both monofilament and fibrillated polypropylene fibers are used:

 

 

- for reduced plastic shrinkage and settlement cracking (reduced early cracking)

 

- to improve impact and shatter resistance

 

- to increase the abrasion resistance of concrete floors

 

- to improve resistance to freeze/thaw cycles

 

- to increase overall durability of concrete structures.

 

 

THE DIFFERENCES

 

 

* Monofilament polypropylene fibers are much more preferable for architectural concrete. Barely visible, they are idoneous for finishing operations.

 

* The structure of fibrillated polypropylene fibers gives them better bond characteristics in comparison with the monofilaments which have a small specific surface area.

 

Fibrillated fibers are slit and expanded to form an open network which will increase the specific surface area and improve considerably the adhesion to the cementitious matrix.

 

 

This improved adhesion:

 

 

- will give concrete a higher residual strength

 

- will permit the replacement of the classic welded wire fabric used as secondary reinforcement for slabs on grade to control cracks from shrinkage and temperature variations (never use these fibers to replace any kind of structural reinforcement)!!

 

 

WHERE BOTH FIBERS SHOULDN’T BE USED

 

 

Both monofilament and fibrillated polypropylene fibers shouldn’t be used:

 

 

- to control cracks from external causes

 

- to increase the distance between floor joints

 

- to produce thinner slabs.

Basic MIG Welding Safety

Anyone who does MIG welding has to follow basic MIG welding safety practices. Bricklayers Tool Kit

The bricklayer’s tool kit must be used with great care and properly maintained, firstly, because of the safety aspect arid secondly, because the tools can be of great expense.
When purchasing tools, consideration must be taken on how often the tools will be used. With every day use, the tools have to be made to be able to withstand the work. Often this is not the case with less expensive tools.

Brick Trowel
These came various sizes and shape ranging between ten and fourteen inches. This will be the most expensive part of the tool kit, thus keeping the bricklayers work level (horizontal) and plumb (vertical). These also come in various sizes. The main size for everyday work is nine hundred millimetres or twelve hundred millimetres.

Boat Level
Like the Spirit Level above, it has two bubbles, (one for levelling, the other for plumbing) but is smaller. It is very
handy for decorative panels and soldier courses.

Line and Pins
These are used when corners of the building have to be built to run in the bricks between. The pins are tapered at the ends to allow for inserting into joints. It is important that the line is kept free of knots and clean of mortar.

Corner Blocks
These are used in pairs as an easy method of holding the line up. These are inexpensive as you can make your own.

Tingle Plate
Another less expansive tool but of great use. II is used for holding the line up over long lengths of walling to remove any sagging.

Club (or lump) Hammer
Used with either a bolster or chisel. It is essential that the head is secure and checked regularly to ensure it never comes loose.
Always wear eye protection goggles.

Bolster
Used for cutting bricks. Eye protection must be used at all times it is used. The end should never be allowed to burr over. This is known as a mushroom and can splinter when being hit. The end should be kept free from mushrooms by a grinding wheel which also allows the culling edge to be kept sharp.

Cold Chisel
Similar to a bolster but with a smaller blade, used more for cutting into brickwork after it has been laid (cheap furniture)e.g. for letting in services. Again maintenance and safely procedures should be followed the same as for the bolster.

Hawk
A small hawk is used when pointing a lot, and makes it easier to hold the mortar.(furniture stores)

Gauge Rod
Inexpensive as you make it yourself. A length of timber with the vertical spacing of the bricks marked along one edge. Used when working from both ends of a wall to ensure that the courses are equal.

Brick Bat Gauge
Another inexpensive tool which is able to be made. Easy to use when a lot of cutting is required and maintains a regular size to the cuts. The one illustrated is made for the three most basic cuts used. Half bat, three quarter bat and closer.

Brick Hammer and Comb Hammer
Two similar types of hammer, one with a fixed head, the other with detachable blades. (coffee tables) When the teeth have worn down, the blades can be renewed. They can be used for a number of jobs:

i. tidying the edges of cuts to leave a clean edge
ii. for what is known as chasing, i.e. letting cables into walls before plastering

Again, safety is of the utmost importance. Goggles must be worn at all limes and hands and fingers must be kept clear.

Steel Tape
The types most commonly used by bricklayers these days. Very convenient size and is easily transported via the belt or pocket. When used in wet conditions it must be wiped after use to prevent rusting.

Jointing Tools
Used for putting a finish to the joints in brick work. A half-round joint which is also known as a bucket handle finish. Two types are shown, these can now be bought from shops but an old pail or bucket handle can be bent to a suitable shape.
