Holiday Fun with Brown Sugar Ham Glaze and a Blowtorch
Making your own brown sugar ham glaze is so simple that you won’t need to buy a commercially prepared sweet-baked ham this year. You can save money by buying, baking, and glazing your own ham this holiday season.
Brining Turkey is Better Than Burning Down Your House was my advice for people to avoid the dangers of deep frying turkeys this year. It may seem a contradiction to now advise you to apply a blowtorch to ham, but the flame that caramelizes sugar is a much more targeted use of heat than dropping a whole carcass into boiling fat.
It’s a lot easier to slice ham than carve turkey anyway, so you may choose to create a brown sugar ham glaze instead of turkey this year. Even if you start with an inexpensive pre-cooked ham, you can still use this method to make a flavorful dinner that you’d expect to pay a lot for.
In a stove-top sauce pan, I combine 1 cup brown sugar, ½ cup orange marmalade, 1/3 cup bourbon, and ¼ cup whole grain mustard. You can use the ingredients you desire, perhaps substituting apple jam for the marmalade and apple juice for the bourbon. What ever ingredients you choose, they are heated until they form a thick syrup that can be brushed on the ham.
There are two steps to creating a sweet-topped ham. The first is to fully cook the ham to assure the safety of the food. However, we don’t want to dry it out. Actually, we want to initially ADD as much moisture to the ham as possible. This means we need a moist, convective cooking method.
The best way to retain moisture is to cook the ham in the oven, supported on a rack in a roasting pan. You can add a flavorful liquid like apple juice, pineapple juice, or vegetable stock and cover the pan with a lid or foil.
In this enclosed environment, the ham will steam in the flavorful liquid, giving greater moisture and flavor to the inexpensive ham you’ve purchased.
However, a crunchy brown sugar ham glaze is created by caramelizing sugars. Sugars turn brown and brittle at 320F (160C) in a dry environment. That’s why it’s now time to switch to a dry, conductive application of heat.
After brushing the first coat of the brown sugar ham glaze, the ham is returned to the oven. This time, it’s uncovered and any liquid is removed from the pan. Remember, we want direct dry heat. So, you should place the ham as close to the top of the oven as possible.
Once the glaze is dried and begins to caramelize, that’s when you can really make a hard candy shell by using a blowtorch, propane torch, or crème brulee’ torch to apply intense heat directly to the glaze.
The key to creating your own brown sugar ham glaze is to create a thick syrup using brown sugar, jam, liquid and a condiment. Then, your control of indirect moist heat, as well as direct dry heat will give you the most flavorful holiday ham that you created yourself.

Good Gas Cylinders A Must If Safety Is A Priority
Compressed gas cylinders are use all over the place, in homes and offices, and in industrial sites where fuel is needed. However, these canisters are highly volatile and have to be kept in perfect condition if they are to be used safely. Cryogenic cylinders, on the other hand, not only have to be safe, they also have to withstand some rather low temperatures too. All in all, these canisters withstand huge pressures and the slightest crack or hole makes them very dangerous things indeed.
The canisters come in very many sizes depending on what they are being used for. For example, in hospitals; they are used to hold all the different gases that are needed when someone is undergoing an operation. In the industrial field, they may be used to hold highly flammable substances needed for welding and such. Even carbonated drinks use them too since we all like the bubbles in soda.
Care and attention must be given to the storing of such canisters because of the volatility of what they contain. Anyone wanting to purchase such a canister must always go to someone who is well versed in their care. If there is even the tiniest of holes, this thing can go off like a rocket and some people have lost their homes when one explodes inside.
If one now adds highly flammable liquids inside the canister, maybe for acetylene welding etc, the heat and the fuel together make for a rather explosive mix too. So it is very important that hard-wearing and leak proof canisters are sought right from day one. It only takes one mistake to ruin the reputation of a company so bona fide suppliers will definitely go that extra mile to make sure that they only supply top quality goods.
Indeed, a good company will advise those who buy canisters on how to take care of them from the minute they leave the place. Customer care and attention is a high priority so they give out information freely to ensure that no one will get hurt or property destroyed by a canister that is badly handled. This also aids repeat business too since those who have been treated well will always come back for more, and usually they bring other people with them to get the same service as well.
Looking for a qualified and respected company to supply this kind of canister then is a top priority. The internet is the perfect place to start the search and checks can be done on any company at the same time. Background checks are very possible these days and it must be well worth the trouble considering the damage that can be done if someone does not take care.
In fact, it may be a good idea to check out who they supply anyway to see what kind of service they give. If some multi-national is buying from them, it is probably a safe bet that they have already been vetted thoroughly. This is not the time to be penny-pinching from back street suppliers since cheap is not always best!
Stewart Wrighter recently met with a skilledcompressed gas cylinders installer for an engineering project he is working on. He searched the termcryogenic cylinders in order to find a company.

Options for Welding Education Programs
The process of joining metal together in a functional way is called welding. This old and most prevalent way to work with metal provides students with many options for welding education programs and study. Students can enter programs at the vocational level to fully understand the field of welding.
There are numerous methods used to weld metal together and students have the option of choosing programs that cover one major area or multiple areas. A combination program may be the best choice for students who wish to have more career options upon completion. Focused programs are very useful to become highly proficient in one welding technique, which makes students specialized and able to advance within the profession. Some main options available through welding schools and colleges include:
*ARC Welding
This type of welding is the simplest and most used method. Professionals use a general power supply to generate an electrical current that heats and connects two pieces of metal together.
*TIG Welding Tungsten Inert Gas or TIG welding is used to create a very precise weld on all metals. The use of an electrode heats metal while under the protection of a shielding gas, usually Argon, to remove any contaminants from the weld.
Other areas of study can lead students to work exclusively with pipe welding. According to the Bureau of labor Statistics there are over 100 procedures that can be used to weld metal together. This fact alone makes the need for education even greater. When deciding on a vocational college students need to first determine what level of education they want to pursue. Students that want to work through a certificate or associate’s degree program can find many program options in vocational schools.
Welding certificates are usually short and highly specific. Practical training focuses on giving students practice with welding and blueprint reading. Many programs offer students training in pipe welding where they learn the four common welding positions; horizontal rolled, fixed, inclined, and vertical. Students can expect to complete two semesters of introductory welding principles. Maintenance welding, print reading, and arc welding are the prominent areas explored inside a certificate program. Students can pursue more education or enter jobs in industrial technology or at construction companies.
Associate’s degree programs are highly common and the best way to enter the field prepared. Relevant coursework is integrated with many hours of hands-on experience conducting welding projects. The technical, safety, and practical uses of welding are covered as students work through different phases. Students work with one welding procedure and then move on to another one. Many programs have a section where students learn how to use multiple welding practices to connect different structures together.
Both accredited educational options prepare students to work in the industry by providing them with the specific technical skills needed. The American Council for Construction Education (ACCE) can fully accredit qualifying welding training programs that offer the best training. Education is available from many schools and students can begin training once a program is selected.

The Welland Canal’s Importance to the Metal Stamping Industry
Logistics and transportation are areas where efficiency makes for a successful bottom line; many industries have been lured from North America by lower overhead, less regulation, and more freedom to dump waste. The last thing industry here in the First World needs is an expensive disaster that interrupts the supply line to industries like metal stamping of parts for larger industries. Deadlines for delivery, the cost of shipping – vital factors like these can become unmanageable during a sustained interruption of the logistical chain.
Take for example the raw materials and machinery needed to operate a custom metal stamping factory that makes parts that require custom parts made with difficult forms or deep drawing to fill the order that makes another company tick. The stamping factory will need special tools and stamping machinery. The best equipment would be most likely imported from Germany where the highest quality machinery is produced. The German equipment comes in across the ocean into a city like Detroit or Chicago, where it may change over to finish the journey by rail. Then the rolls of steel or aluminum have to come in from another continent perhaps. All of this cargo is typical to shipping on the Great Lakes. An accident or sabotage along one of the canals or locks could paralyze many industries, and in fact both accidents and sabotage have occurred along the Welland Canal.
It was a clear and pleasant evening several miles from where I grew up in Welland, in a small town called Allenburg along the canal heading north to St. Catherines. Allenburg is basically a coffee shop, a stoplight, an antique store – oh yes…and one lift bridge. Canal bridges are pretty easy to drive – one stick makes them go up, the other stick makes them go down. You see the lake boat coming, raise the bridge; after the boat passes, lower it and raise the gates for the long line of cars to continue on their way. It seems simple enough but when the lake freighter Windoc, carrying million dollars worth of grain was passing through the bridge began to come down before the ship had cleared. The funnel crashed into the span and was sheared off, destroying the freighter and the bridge. The Seaway had to close for several days, causing a chain-reaction as boats had to set anchor. The bridge had to remain in the up position for the rest of the shipping season, to the consternation of drivers who had to take a detour for nearly a year. N.M. Paterson and Sons, the owners of the Windoc had to sue the Seaway operators for .8 million to recover their losses but the day-to-day losses cost time and money to thousands of other businesses due to interruption in production.
Security along the Welland canal in Ontario is practically non-existent; the last sabotage plot was in 1916 when German diplomat Franz von Papen threatened to blow up the canal, but he had already been expelled from the U.S. for espionage. A dynamite charge was planted on the hinges of one of the locks in 1900 doing minor damage. When it comes to sabotage the official story of the 2000 – 2008 White House regarding terrorists states that terrorists are everywhere waging war on North American soil yet there’s an easy target on the Canadian side of the border that would cause havoc if taken out by explosives. Without bridges and lift locks St. Lawrence Seaway would close for a long period and disrupt the economy. Interrupting logistics is a basic tenet of military strategy. The answer is that the corporatists and extremely wealthy elite are in control of events and they will only destroy things when it’s in their interests, such as the military implosion demolition of the obsolete, largely non rentable, asbestos-ridden towers of the World Trade Center. Anyone who works with steel will tell you that fires can’t cause skyscrapers to collapse and explode into a fine dust. The implosion that removed Building 7 was recorded from many angles. All three buildings went down at the speed of gravity, the hallmark of controlled demolition. They who own the cargo protect the route on which it travels.
