Product Description
Welding made effortless! With simple techniques targeted to a wide and general audience, this guide eliminates the intimidation from an all-too-often technical craft. Rather than creating a manual workbook with elaborate, complicated drawings and instructions, Kimberli Matin takes readers on a journey of creative discovery. With purchased steel rod and bar or found metal parts from a salvage yard, plus basic, easy-to-use tools, she shows how to construct 25 whimsically attractive items. From a garden chair fashioned from an old tractor seat and odd parts to a stunning tri-fold screen and a delicate, filigreed plant stand, these great projects will make welders out of everyone!
Ready, Set, Weld!: Beginner-Friendly Projects for the Home & Garden

I got this book for my brother, who is a certified welder. He is usually laid off in the winter, and the purpose of this book was to give him ideas for projects he could do during his time off. Either for christmas presents or to sell. He tells me the book is perfect for that. I would give it 5 stars but havent seen the book myself!

Based on the two previous reviews, the book empowers women to make functional welded metal artwork. That seems to be the author’s objective and it is fair to say she meets it.
I have used a stick welder as a home hobbyist for more than ten years. I do not do much artwork, but mostly repairs and fabrications. My wife bought this for me as a birthday gift. She found it at a fabric store for seamstresses, not at a home improvement store where welding equipment is sold. I have never before seen floral patterns on welder’s gloves or swirls on a face shield, but the author says it is a matter of her self-expression and makes her feel good.
The author uses and suggests a MIG welder with gas shielding. Her information on welding with a MIG unit is basic and accurate, as well as practical based on her experience and needs. You will not find a lot about running a smooth bead or full penetration of the base materials in this book. The author emphasizes that anyone doing structural welding should take approved classes.
She confessed to a breakthrough moment when she discovered she could order stock metal pieces (spirals, circles, etc.) for fences, gates, etc. and cut certain design elements from them for use in her own creations. A key part of what the author presents is more about her own sense of proportion and design than about welding tools and techniques. She does richly illustrate the book with photos of her own projects. Some projects are offered in the book with step-by-step instructions, but anyone wanting to branch out with her own ideas would need her own good sense of design.
I am accustomed to welding manuals that probably present less information on MIG welding than this one does because these manuals try to cover several processes. This book focuses on only one process: MIG.

I am really impressed with this book! In it’s short format it truly gives you all the information that you need to start safely and successfully welding your own metal projects. It is clearly written and concise, the pictures are great and instructions easy to follow. I run metal workshops for beginners and am recommending this book to my students.

I can’t believe I’m doing this! I always wanted to learn how to weld to make the exact projects that Kimberli outlines in the book. I bought a Hobart 140 welder, and decided to use straight CO2 for my shielding gas. I ordered some forged components from King Architectural Metals…they arrived yesterday and I made an absolutely gorgeous garden stake today, in just 15 minutes. I’ll post the picture. The book is really well written–the book plus the welder manual and you have all you need to get started.
